At Patriot, we believe it is our responsibility to maintain a safe work environment and to be a good corporate citizen in the communities in which we operate.
Safety is our highest operational priority and the cornerstone of our relationship with all of our employees. Our goal is to work toward zero accidents every shift of every day. Maintaining a safe work environment is part of our culture.
An important component of our safety program is maintaining first-class mine rescue teams. In September 2013, Patriot's mine rescue teams competed in the Biennial National Mine Rescue Contest. In total, 87 teams competed in this national event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Patriot’s Western Kentucky team placed second in the National Mine Rescue event. Our Federal team placed third in the same event. In the National Combination event, which evaluates the overall proficiency of teams in both mine rescue and first aid competitions, our Western Kentucky team placed third. In the National Bench event, a member of our Western Kentucky team placed second.
