Patriot Coal is a leading coal producer and marketer in the eastern United States, with operations and coal reserves in Appalachia and the Illinois Basin. We and our predecessor companies have operated in these regions for more than 50 years.
In 2008, we sold 28.5 million tons of coal, of which 79% was sold to electric utilities and 21% was sold to domestic and global steel producers.
In July 2008, we acquired Magnum Coal Company and nearly doubled our production base.
Our operations consist of 14 current complexes, with one in northern West Virginia, 10 in southern West Virginia and three in western Kentucky.
![]() We ship coal to electric utilities, industrial users and metallurgical coal customers via various company-owned and third-party loading facilities and multiple rail and river transportation routes.
Our mining operations and coal reserves are as follows:
Appalachia
In southern West Virginia, we have 10 mining complexes located in Boone, Clay, Lincoln, Logan and Kanawha counties. In northern West Virginia, we have one complex located in Monongalia County. In July 2008, Patriot more than doubled its Appalachian production base through the purchase of Magnum Coal. We sold 20.6 million tons of coal in Appalachia in 2008. We control 1.2 billion tons of reserves in Appalachia, of which 468 million tons are assigned to current operations. Illinois Basin
In the Illinois Basin, we have three complexes located in Union and Henderson counties in western Kentucky. We sold 7.9 million tons of coal in the Illinois Basin in 2008 and control 655 million tons of reserves in the Illinois Basin, of which 136 million tons are assigned to current operations. |
