FAQs - Energy Supply
How does coal fit into the energy equation?
Coal fuels almost half of the electricity in America for one simple reason: Electricity from coal is essential and affordable.
Coal is essential because it is America's largest energy resource, making up about 94 percent of U.S. fossil energy reserves. Historically, coal-fueled generation has cost less than other fossil fuels, and its price has been more stable than other sources, making it affordable. Electricity from coal also is increasingly clean. Since 1970, emissions from coal-fueled electricity have been significantly reduced, even as coal use has tripled.
How much energy does Patriot Coal supply?
Patriot Coal controls 1.9 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves in Central Appalachia, Northern Appalachia and the Illinois Basin. In 2010, we sold coal to over 70 electricity generating and industrial plants in ten countries, including the United States.
